The formula
The Flesch‑Kincaid grade level estimates how many years of schooling a reader needs to follow a text. It uses two things only: average sentence length and average syllables per word.
Grade = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59.
What the bands mean
Below 6 reads as elementary. 6 to 9 is middle school, 9 to 13 high school, 13 to 17 college, and above 17 graduate level. Most academic writing sits between 13 and 18. Most news writing sits between 8 and 12.
Why humanizers drop it
The quickest way to make text look human to a detector is to make it simpler: shorter sentences, shorter words. That works on the score and wrecks the writing. A grade 16 essay comes back at grade 4, and the technical terms are gone.
How TemplateBreaker holds it
TemplateBreaker rewrites the patterns that read as machine‑made and leaves your vocabulary alone. The rewrite stays close to the grade of the draft, so a college paper still reads like a college paper.
